The first time I was ever exposed to the game of fitba was when I was a mere 4 years old, watching the TV with my dad in the living room of our house in deepest suburban Paisley.  He was watching the '87 cup final, and explained it all to me.  As a Glasgow born Celtic supporter was simply watching it as a neutral.  He thought that, as Dundee United were in the UEFA Cup final that year that they were the better side and wanted them to win.

I asked him one question.

"If we live in Paisley, then why aren't you supporting St. Mirren"

I've held to that ever since, and was quite delighted to see us win that day, though the enormity of the achievement was somewhat understandably lost on me for many years.

Similarly, it took me a long time before I went to my first game.  Dad thankfully, was never one to take me to the Potato Bowl having given up going to matches after a number of bad experiences during Old Firm matches so when I went to my first match at the age of 15, it was to see St.Mirren play, and lose 2-0 against Falkirk.

Despite the loss I really enjoyed the day out, and despite thinking myself somewhat of a jinx during the 99/00 season (I must be one of the only people to have not been to a match we won that season) from 00/01 onwards I've only missed 1 home game.  I also regularly get to away trips on the infamous/legendary Jolly Buddies bus, of which I help out in a 'treasurer' role, keeping track of who's paid what and how much is in the bank.

I joined SMiSA because I believe in the fans standing up and making a difference to the lot of our club.  Whether it's buying shares so that all Saints fans can have a stake in the club, no matter their financial position; or organising events in the local community to help raise the profile of St.Mirren I think SMiSA can be and indeed is a force for good.  Like in any trade union, we are capable of achieving things through strength in numbers that otherwise simply would not be possible.

The webmaster role was something that intrigued me as it's something I could, with my skills base, take on and contribute to the association while issues such as that of the club's complex finances go more over my head.  If I can help explain what SMiSA is, who it is and what it does then I will have done my bit.
